Dr. Ernest Van Johnson, MD, received a Bachelor of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Alabama and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. After completing his residency at Eye Foundation Hospital/University of Alabama in Birmingham, he served in the United States Air Force as Chief of the Ophthalmology Department and Director of Continuing Medical Education in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1992, he established Tuscaloosa Ophthalmology in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he practices general ophthalmology with special interest in cataract surgery, laser treatment, and the management of glaucoma and diabetic eye diseases.
Dr. Johnson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and received the Retina and Vitreous Award from the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He has also served as a respected Clinical Associate Professor with the Department of Surgery at the College of Community Health Sciences, University of Alabama School of Medicine.
His knowledge of the field is well proven by the many papers, publications, and articles he has authored and seminars he has directed and lectured as well as doing clinical rotations with medical students and residents. Dr. Johnson is active in many professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology.
